Why You Should Never Shave a Husky: A Rescue Story With a Hopeful Future

Above: Patchy regrowth on a senior Husky’s coat — a visible reminder of why shaving double-coated breeds can be harmful.

Earlier this week, I met a beautiful senior Husky who had recently been rescued from a heartbreaking situation. Her story is a powerful reminder of both the resilience of animals and the importance of understanding breed-specific care — especially when it comes to grooming.

This sweet girl had been shaved multiple times by her previous owner, a mistake many make out of good intentions during hot weather. But for double-coated breeds like Huskies, shaving can do far more harm than good. Her coat, which is supposed to insulate and protect her from both heat and cold, is now growing back in uneven patches, leaving visible spots where her fur struggles to return.

Thankfully, she’s now in a loving home where her new family is dedicated to helping her heal — both physically and emotionally. We’re working together on a gentle grooming routine, with regular baths and brushing sessions designed to stimulate her hair follicles and support healthy regrowth.

Her backstory is heart-wrenching. She was found chained to a fence in the brutal Arizona heat, with no food, no water, and no shelter — completely abandoned. It’s unimaginable to think of the suffering she endured. But despite everything, she remains incredibly sweet, affectionate, and trusting.

Now, she’s safe. She’s loved. And she’s finally receiving the care she deserves.

Let this be a reminder to all pet parents: shaving a double-coated dog can do permanent damage to their coat and leave them vulnerable to sunburn, overheating, and other health issues. Always consult with a professional groomer or veterinarian before making decisions about your pet’s grooming needs.
